Re-Zoning Aurora: How to encourage space for people, and not space for things

Re-imagining Aurora Ave N means re-thinking the buildings that line Aurora. In dense neighborhoods like Belltown or Capitol Hill, you don’t see a lot of storage units or parking lots. And yet the neighborhoods up and down Aurora have both of those - and are getting more. As the urban villages along Aurora develop and more buildings come in, how can we ensure that those buildings are places where people can live, shop, work, and spend time, not just store things?

In 2016 the ALUV neighborhood group successfully advocated for a moratorium on self-storage buildings and led the way for how we think about zoning in urban villages. What will it take to transform the Aurora corridor, and how can specific zoning changes support that transformation? Join Ryan DiRaimo, Aurora-Licton Urban Village resident and leader of the ALUV neighborhood group, as he leads a walk-and-talk along Aurora Ave, focusing on zoning nuance and how transportation systems and urban planning reinforce one another.

Meet at the base of the Aurora Pedestrian Bridge in Oak Tree Village (N 102nd Street & Aurora Ave N)
We'll walk and roll about a mile in total and end at a local family-friendly, dog-friendly brewery for conversation, Q&A, and commiserating. Please contact us if you have any accessibility concerns.
